Our Vineyard
BAIE Wines is located in the Bellarine Peninsula and is strongly influenced by the maritime cool climate. The vineyard is bound to the North directly overlooking Port Phillip Bay, and the 20-year-old vines are grown on coastal loam, with a clay loam subsoil. Our wines are made from domain grown fruit in Curlewis, Bellarine Peninsula Geelong at a Latitude – 38.163354 and Longitude 144.542334.
The focus of viticulture and winemaking is to best represent our geology, climate and the grape growing season of that year respectfully, consistently and honestly. All stages of fruit development, such as pruning and canopy management, are overseen by Simon and Peter to retain the integrity of the vineyard and season, and nurture each wine’s personality. We work on the simple principles that wines begin in the soil. Each year we work on assessing and managing requirements of soil, vine health, rainfall and protection from sun and wind to ensure an approach to grow the best fruit possible.

VINTAGES
Vintage 2018
The 2018 growing season was a cracker. Solid earlier rainfall combined with warm summer and autumn temperatures saw an abundant and balanced crop with excellent ripening. This translates to stunning flavours in the fruit with the Pinot Gris being harvested first in early March and the Sauvignon Blanc and Shiraz harvested mid to late March respectively.
Vintage 2019
The 2019 growing season was not without its challenges, given we experienced one of the hottest and driest summers ever. While this translated to slightly lower yields the fruit quality and flavour was noted as an excellent year. A short harvest given extensive ripening, but overall an exciting vintage producing wines of excellent depth and quality.
Vintage 2020
2020 Vintage was unlike any we have seen in recent years, and so we couldn’t be prouder of the wines produced under challenging conditions. Budburst was slightly later and flowering conditions compromised due to wind and cooler temperatures resulting in a reduction in yields. The final challenge for Pete and Simon in the vineyard was the late rainfall through Jan and early February that made ripening and disease management their most crucial priority. Harvest began later and fruit ripeness was slow, seeing slightly higher acids and delicate flavour profiles which gave our winemakers the opportunity to carefully manage the fruit to make light and crisp wines which they loved doing.
VARIETALS
Our estate vineyards consist of Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Gris, Rosé and Shiraz. A small portfolio by comparison to other wineries, however the quality and consistency we achieve makes them all highly sought after. With great attention to the flavour profile reflecting the fruit each wine is well known for their characteristics.
